10/17&18, 2009

Saturday was a much needed rest from the work/school routine and we took full advantage of the eighty degree weather to open the windows and clean the condo (or town home, or whatever we are supposed to call it). Graham tackled the master bath while Nan unpacked the remaining boxes of towels, books, etc. The kids proceeded to mess up everything that we straightened but those of you with children know this to be par for the course.

Nan took the kids to the Emergency Festival at Aptos Park to learn about earthquake preparedness as this was the 20th anniversary of the Loma-Prieta earthquake (6.8) that tore up the San Francisco area and Santa Cruz as as well. Nan met all the local fire and rescue personnel, the kids got finger printed and DNA sampled, but the hit of the day was the inflatables and the earthquake simulator. We will soon have a earthquake kit, and we learned to have a bag tied to your bed that includes heavy duty shoes (for glass) and and flashlight (for night time quakes). We see the earthquake danger as part of life, like growing up in hurricane country for Nan or snow storms for Graham.

We basically just chilled out Saturday night as everyone is tired from the move and all the new stuff we are experiencing.

Sunday was another beautiful day and Nan began by sleeping late and then going for a fabulous run in the redwoods while Graham followed the Brazilian GP on his iPhone (yes it is strange writing in third person about yourself). Upon Nan's return Graham went mountain biking in said redwood forest and then we cleaned and straightened up some more.

Our fun outing for the day was the pumpkin patch where Sara and Mills picked out some jack-0-lantern quality pumpkins. We then went to Trader Joe's and found some great prices on organic food. What a great place Trader Joe's is, and today was Graham's first journey to that store. After shopping we went to Pleasure Point to watch the surfers and then came home to get ready for dinner and Monday stuff. Thanks to all the readers out there - we are Santa Cruzin!

Look close and you'll see the surfers

Sara looked at every single pumpkin before making her choice. The profits from the sales went to alcohol addicted families.

Mills in the pumpkin/hay bale maze. "It stinks in here" he says.
